Professional Update: Jag Baseball

Although Coach Steve Kitrell has stepped down from his post at South Alabama, his influence is still felt throughout baseball as his former players impact the professional ranks. Here is an update on Jag alumni in the pros.

THE SHOW

Juan Pierre - OF - Chicago White Sox - '98
.274, 43 R, 8 2B, 3 3B, 1 HR, 25 RBI in 368 AB, 27 BB, 26 K, 15/25 SB, .333 OBP

Adam Lind - 1B - Toronto Blue Jays - '04
.300, 39 R, 9 2B, 16 HR, 32 RBI in 277 AB, 22 BB, 57 K, .505 SLG, .854 OPS

David Freese - 3B - St. Louis Cardinals - '06
.319, 17 R, 6 2B, 3 HR, 19 RBI in 144 AB, .426 SLG, .793 OPS

P.J. Walters - RHP - St. Louis Cardinals - '06
0-0, 0.00, 2 App, 0 H and 1 BB to 2 K in 2.2 IP, .000 OppBA

Mike Nakamura - RHP - Yomiuri Giants (Central League, Nippon Professional League) - '97
0-0, 5.40, 2 App, 3 H and 1 BB to 1 K in 1.2 IP
(He started off the year injured, then threw in relief on consecutive nights, June 29th and 30th, and hasn't pitched since. I'd have to speculate his injury flared back up.)

AAA

Ryan Mulhern - OF - Saraperos de Saltillo (Mexican League) - '03
.366, 30 R, 6 2B, 2 3B, 13 HR, 46 RBI in 134 AB, 20 BB, 29 K, .731 SLG, 1.180 OPS
(Ryan was hitting .348 with 10 homeruns and 34 runs batted in over 29 games for the Southern Maryland Blue Crabs before having his contract sold to Saltillo on June 7th.)

AA

Ray Kruml - OF - New York Yankees - '08
.301, 56 R, 11 2B, 7, 3B, 5 HR, 26 RBI in 355 AB, 23 BB, 76 K, 30/39 SB, .343 OBP

High-A

Brandon Sage - LHP - New York Mets - '09
2-3, 0 Sv, 3.95, 17 App, 31 H and 8 BB to 14 K in 27.1 IP, .287 OppBA
(After a brief and inconsistent stint in AA, Brandon is back in Class A Advanced with St. Lucie of the Florida State League, where he started the season. No doubt he will rebound.)

A

Matt Jackson - RHP - San Deigo Padres - '09
4-1, 1 Sv, 2.24, 14 App, 5 GS, 39 H and 9 BB to 60 K in 52.1 IP, .200 OppBA
(Four of his last 5 outings had been starts, but he was placed on the DL on July 1st with an Oblique injury.)

Kevin Nabors - RHP - Los Angeles Angels - '08
1-2, 10.23, 20 App, 36 H and 24 BB to 17 K in 22 IP, .350 OppBA
(Kevin had a nice run of consecutive scoreless outings, but his last three appearances have been rough. Such is life recovering from injury.)

Short Season

Brandon Brown - SS - New York Mets - '10
.300, 16 R, 1 2B, 4 HR, 8 RBI in 80 AB, 3 BB, 21 K, 2/2 SBA, .325 OBP
(This is a nice start for Brandon playing for Brooklyn at Class A Short-Season in the New York-Penn League as he was more known for his work with the leather while at USA.)

Rookie Ball

Brent Tanner - C – Chicago White Sox - '11
.111, 2 R, 2 2B, 2 RBI in 27 AB, 3 BB, 9 BB in 9 Games

.311, 17 R, 8 2B, 2 HR, 21 RBI in 135 AB, 20 BB, 20 K, .404 OBP
