After James Madison coach Mickey Mathews accepted and then reversed course on being South Alabama's first football coach, Joe Gottfried and the search committee once again leaped into action. The question everyone has is "Where did the plane and Joe Gottfried flown to today?" Jagsjungle.com has the answer. | ||||

Reliable sources tell Jagsjungle.com that the private plane carrying Joe Gottfried and perhaps other members of the search committee has landed in Birmingham on Wednesday afternoon. They are there, obviously, to discuss the job once more with Birmingham Southern coach Joey Jones. Jones was in Mobile on Monday for his second interview and by all accounts did very well. He was naturally disappointed when he was told that Mickey Mathews was going to be the next coach, but that changed several hours later when word reached him of Mathews' flipflop. All is not clear sailing for the former Mobile prep star, though. Apparently current Clemson assistant coach (and fellow former Crimson Tide wide receiver) Dabo Swinney had also received a call about contention in the job. Jones, after weeks of being told he was a viable candidate but being passed over at least two times, has informed USA representatives that he will not stay in the position search any longer. In short, he either wants USA to choose him now or to move on. Jones' stance is not to be wondered at. The prolonged coaching search, while not the fault of USA, has left Jones and Birmingham Southern in an awkward position. The fair thing to do for all concerned is to resolve the question of Joey Jones' candidacy for once and for all. |
