Taking Shape

It looks like Joey Jones may have completed the first phase of hiring for his new staff at the University of South Alabama. Jagsjungle.com breaks it down and adds a surprising new name.

According to reports, all the coaches described in the previous story about the USA coaching staff have been hired. Expected to be announced within the next few days, here is our best guess of what the new staff will look like.

Offensive Coordinator/Quarterbacks - Dameyune Craig: Expect him to install a wide-open spread option attack like the one that averaged 46.1 points per game that he helped run at Tuskegee. T heBlount grad should help build local support.

Defensive Coordinator - Bill Clark: Even though he has yet to go public, Clark was conducting interviews of other assistant candidates with his good friend, Joey Jones. Will run an aggressive 3-4 if he sticks to what he's done in the past. His outstanding reputation will help recruiting in-state kids.

Offensive Line - John Turner: Avidly pursued an assistant position at USA for the last few months. Wants to be in Mobile and has great local connections.

Tight Ends/Recruiting Coordinator - Ronnie Cottrell: Maybe the best in the nation at garnering talent. He's looking for a chance to rehabilitate his image and USA will be the beneficiary of that desire.

Now the big news of the day. We're not sure what position he may coach, but the word is that former Dennis Franchione assistant Les Koenning, Jr. has been hired as well. Koenning is a longtime Division I assistant and was offensive coordinator for the Texas A&M Aggies. His association as a member of Franchione's staff at Alabama may work against him, but his experience at college football's highest level will be invaluable for the young USA staff. The question still to be answered is where will he coach? The other four coaches break down to one defensive and three offensive coaches and Joey Jones himself is an offensive coach, specializing in wide receivers. It seems unlikely that Koenning would increase that imbalance by also being an offensive coach, but that is where his recent experience comes from.
