| Evans Makes History | ||||
|
Spanish Fort High School's Keith Evans is a young man with a great perspective on history. When he saw his chance to be a part of it, Evans killed two birds with one stone. As of March 29th, Evans now holds the dual honor of being the first athlete from Spanish Fort to accept a scholarship from a four-year university and the first ever football player to commit to play for the Jaguars of USA. | ||||

This first verbal commitment for the program even caught the staff at USA by surprise. NCAA rules prevent them from contacting recruits in the early part of the spring but they do not prohibit athletes from calling coaches. Knowing that he wanted to be a part of building the South Alabama from the ground up, Evans called the coaches at South Alabama and secured a scholarship offer, which he promptly accepted. The versatile 5'11, 175lb wide receiver/defensive back helped lead Spanish Fort, a school in only its third year of existence, to a 4-6 record. Along the way he caught 19 passes for 379 yards and six touchdowns while on defense he had 38 tackles and two interceptions, one of which he returned for a touchdown. Spanish Fort coach Bryant Vincent has nothing but positive things to say about his star player. "He's a good kid. Very polite," he said. "He's well-respected around school and he can flat out fly!" Evans and his 4.5 forty-yard dash will probably focus on defense once he arrives at USA, but, with the need for as many playmakers on the field at one time as possible, Evans may find himself pulling double-duty in the early going. One thing is certain, no matter where Evans lines up he will be star the minute he hits the field as he assumes the title of First Jag. |
